Saturday
You are required to be at the Start Line for 2:00 P.M. on Saturday and will be finished at about 7:00 P.M. Our primary concern is that the Start Line is secure and safe for the runners. In order to achieve this, we need to barricade the area in front and to the rear of the Start Line. There are about 300 metal barricades to be placed along Laurier Ave. and Elgin St. These barricades are about 2M long and weigh about 15kg each. Once these are placed, it is necessary to marshal the area to keep it clear of spectators and to ensure that the runners are placed behind the Start Line. We set up a false start line about 10M before the real Start Line so that the timers can set up their equipment and also to allow any elite runners a space to line up in front of the main body of runners. As you are wearing a vest thet indicates that you are a volunteer, the spectators will assume that you know everything about the event. This makes it necessary for you to be familiar with the start times, where the finish is, where spectators can view the finish, where the recovery area is, etc. All this information is covered on the Race Weekend web page www.runottawa.com. This information is also included in the event guide booklet which the runners get and hopefully, we'll have some for you as well. The Start Line is an exciting place to be, and you get a good look at all the runners. Once the runners have left the Start, we secure the area again for the dismantling of the Start structure, pick up the garbage & clothes left behind(gloves supplied), and remove the barricades. Be aware of the weather forecast for the time you will be involved, and dress accordingly as the events go rain/snow/shine/hot/cold.
Thank you for considering helping out at the Race Weekend Start Line. I look forward to meeting you.
